The town was founded in 1974 to accommodate workers from the large dams and hydroelectric power stations of the La Grande Complex, including La Grande-1 and the Robert-Bourassa development (LG-2), the world's largest underground hydroelectric power station. Its immense dam, the equivalent of a 53-storey building, is worth the trip alone! Some 185,000 workers stayed in the region from 1950 to the early 2000s to build these hydroelectric complexes. It goes without saying that Hydro-Québec's free guided tour of these monumental installations is one of the region's major attractions.
