This canyon is an inviting place to climb and is popular with sportsmen who hike to a viewpoint of Canmore and Lake Gap.

For the more athletic, the hike along Grotto Canyon (departure 10 minutes from Canmore on the Trans-Canada Highway) takes you to a spectacular viewpoint over Canmore and Gap Lake. It takes about 2 hours each way. The trail follows a waterfall and near the waterfall is a rock face where you can still see petroglyphs of the Hopi tribe, dating back over 1000 years. The place is popular for climbing. Be careful to wear shoes with good crampons as the place can be very slippery.
