With a population of 50,000, Grande Prairie is located just off Dawson Creek and the Zero Mile of the Alaska Highway in British Columbia. Its environment, unusual for this latitude, is very fertile, hence its name. Around the city, the Saskatoon Island Provincial Park features the aquatic vegetation of Little Lake and its swans. The Peace Country continues north along the Peace River. You can stop at Rycroft, where the tourist information centre is housed under a red and white tepee (a nice nod to peace between Native Americans and others). The three-dimensional map of Alberta, on display at the Mackenzie Crossroads Museum in High Level, will give you an idea of the northern part of the province.
