A small river port on the right bank of the Congo River, a sleepy village under the mango trees, Ngabé was home to the women of Makoko. The first of these, the Ngassa, was often chosen to be the guardian of sacred objects such as the Nkwémbali, the "spirit of the kingdom", residing in a sacred cataract. One of the last queens of the Tékés, Ngalifourou lived in Mbé until 1956 and was awarded the Légion d'honneur. Her family still has an ebony bust of her by the talented sculptor Massengo. Tradition attributes her great magical power, enabling her to transform men into animals, command wild beasts..
