IRON MARKET
At the end of 2008, then collapsed during the 2010 earthquake, the famous Iron Market (or the Iron Market, or Hyppolite Market), built in the 1890 s and whose metal elements were transported from Paris, was rebuilt very quickly thanks to the financing of the Digicel telecommunications company. Considered an emblematic monument to Port-au-Prince and declared "Historic Heritage", its structure recalls the ancient Halles of Paris, a tropical version: Four finely carved metal turrets wear a porch overfitted with a clock. Bought by President Florvil Hyppolite, the building was destined for Cairo station in Egypt.
If the 2011 reconstruction had led to a refreshing version of more than centenary architecture of the halles, green and red paint giving them a glimmer of gestures, the market burned completely in mid-February 2018… Spices, condiments, fruits and vegetables, clothing and voodoous accessories were found there. In our last passage, no decision had been taken on the future of the market.
