Founded in 1862 under another name, the town was renamed in the late 1930s after Santiago Humberstone, one of the great saltpeter pioneers. Today, it is a true ghost town where the souls of the former inhabitants still seem to breathe. All the life that has disappeared from this site is evoked by the swimming pool, the pulquería, the theatre where the workers used to come to see shows on weekends. Carcasses of all kinds stand next to rusty houses and the desert wind seems to be the only survivor of a catastrophe that struck the city. Since 2005, the site is classified as a World Heritage Site protected by Unesco.
