Founded on January 5, 1789 by Chilean governor Don Ambrosio O'Higgins, as Villa de San Ambrosio de Vallenar. Today, it is the center of mining and agricultural activity in Huasco province. The Huasco Valley, where terraced farming is practiced, is covered with small plots of horticulture, arboriculture, market gardening and olive groves. The valley is also home to a typical liqueur, el pajarete, a sweet wine, and it's also here that you'll find, according to the regionals, the best pisco in Chile. Don't forget to stop off here if you're in the middle of the "flowery desert".
