White Catholic church, the city's landmark, built on a hill and accessible by zigzag stairs
Very photogenic, this all-white Catholic church is the town's emblematic monument. A chapel was built on this hill in 1541, when Panjim was just a fishing village. In 1609, it was replaced by a more imposing church in the Portuguese Baroque style. European sailors made landfall here before heading up the Mandovi River to Old Goa. The zig-zag stairs leading up to the church were added in the 18th century.
