Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai, a wealthy sweets merchant in Pune, lost his son to the plague at the end of the 19th century. A wise man advised him to erect a temple dedicated to Ganesh. Highly revered, the idol within the sanctuary stands 2.2 meters high and is adorned with almost 40 kilos of gold! Donations from devotees go to the Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Trust, which finances an old people's home and the schooling of 400 underprivileged children.
