Mumbai : Discover

Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, is often referred to as "the city of dreams", "the city that never sleeps" and " Maximum City ". Situated on the west coast of India, with the turbulent Arabian Sea on one side and the Western Ghats on the other, it is a lively and colorful city. The city was called Bombay for over four centuries. The origin of this name is obscure, but it is thought to come from the Portuguese expression " bom bahia ", meaning "the good bay". In the main local languages, the city was referred to as Mumbai, after the local goddess Mumba Devi. In 1997, the city's name change was ratified by an act of Parliament, following the victory of the fundamentalist Hindu Shiv Sena party in local elections. The city, whose population is estimated at around 21.67 million, has expanded considerably in recent decades.
