The city's emblematic museum, built to commemorate the visit of King George, houses more than 50,000 different items

The Prince of Wales Museum is the city's iconic museum, and since 1995 its official name is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya. Built to commemorate the visit of King George, it was inaugurated in 1922. Of Anglo-Indian architecture, it seduces by its imposing beauty. The dome of the building was inspired by the Gol Gumbaz of Bijapur.

The museum houses more than 50,000 pieces, sculptures, paintings, ancient artifacts and archaeological finds. One can admire a collection of objects and art from the Indus Valley civilization, including the ancient Guptas, Mauryas, Chalukyas and Rashtratuka civilizations. The Krishna Gallery, inaugurated in March 2009, houses only art objects dedicated to this popular god of the Hindu pantheon. Works by European painters are on display as well as Chinese and Japanese antiques. A gallery is dedicated to decorative arts. The evolution of textiles in India can also be admired in one gallery, and a collection of miniature paintings in another. The Maritime Heritage Gallery exhibits navigational artifacts, and there is also a gallery of ancient coins. Many artifacts have been donated by individuals, including the Tata family. Note that the numismatic gallery is open to visitors after years of closure.

The place frequently hosts ephemeral exhibitions. Events such as workshops, concerts, dance performances or readings are also regularly organized.
