Muktagiri, also sometimes called Mendhagiri, is neither a town nor a village, but a sublime complex of 52 Jain temples lost in the lush vegetation of the Satpura Mountains, on the border between Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, with a population of less than 100. The present complex, built on the walls of a rocky cirque, dates from the 15th century, but these places, which hold innumerable legends, have been sacred for eternity. Several million Jain saints would have reached nirvana there. Muktagiri, whose name means "to free oneself" or "rain of pearls", is also famous for the miracles which are accomplished there.
