ROYAL CHHATRIS

This set of chhatris or royal funerary monuments is one of the high places of Orchha. The most beautiful are sheltered behind a wall in the heart of a perfectly maintained garden. The site has 15 cenotaphs that perpetuate the memory of the kings of Bundelkhand, including that of Vir Singh Deo. Most of them follow the same plan: a square raised terrace, with a square tower of 3 floors at each corner. The towers are connected by a set of galleries perched on arches. In the center of the structure a round tower topped by a dome in the shape of a papal tiara.
