KASBAH OF TAOURIRT
Magnificent kasbah in Ouarzazate, offering a tour of the large, sumptuously decorated rooms with experienced guides
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Taourirt kasbah dates back to the 12th century. It is famous for having been one of the residences of the powerful pasha of Marrakech, Thami el Glaoui. After offering a banquet to Moulay Hassan and his starving troops, the Glaouis were given command of the southern Sahara, marking the beginning of their meteoric rise. As warlords, they increased their influence to become major players in relations with the French protectorate. By the 1940s, Thami el Glaoui was known throughout Europe for the splendor of his parties and palaces. He was also a powerful businessman with a monopoly on many trades. The strategic position of the Taourirt kasbah at the confluence of two rivers (Ouarzazate and Dadès) led Thami el Glaoui to occupy it. The kasbah was bought by the municipality of Ouarzazate in the 1970s. Today, you can visit this magnificent kasbah, which was recently restored. Beware, however, of the many guides with official titles who offer their services at the entrance. Not all of them are reliable, and generally don't know their stuff. This is the city's only must-see tour; however, don't expect to see any large, sumptuously decorated halls - there aren't any. There are, however, a few rooms that are well worth a visit, such as the absolutely superb Salle du Pacha. The site was somewhat damaged by the 2023 earthquake, but can still be visited.
