Orson Welles' film, shot on the ramparts and Skala, won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1952. This 17th-century armed fortification, larger than that of the Kasbah, served to defend the port from outside attack. The 4 faces of the dungeons still bear the inscription "Barakat Mohammed", the city's motto invoking the Prophet's blessing on its inhabitants.
