The khettaras, an ingenious ancestral irrigation system, bear witness to human adaptation to the challenges of the desert. These subterranean galleries, 6 to 8 km long, capture underground water from the mountains, carrying it by gravity to the palm grove. Dating back to the 14th century, the khettaras enabled the development of agriculture. Their ingenious design, with wells linked by inclined tunnels, ensures a constant supply of water. Today, tours of these underground galleries are available.
