Originally, Erfoud was a French garrison, installed in 1917 in order to "pacify" the Moroccan southeast. It has the appearance of an administrative city, with wide avenues lined with tamarisk trees, the two main ones being Moulay Ibrahim and Mohamed V avenues, which intersect perpendicularly at the post office. A town of 10,000 inhabitants, Erfoud is of little interest other than being the ideal starting point for trips to Rissani, the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, or excursions into the desert around Merzouga. On the road to Er-Rachidia, you will find many small fossil museums, which are actually merchants. A few kilometers from Erfoud, the kasbahs of Al Jofr and Maadid, on the right, can be good visits. Erfoud is an obligatory stopover on the way to Rissani and Merzouga, and has a multitude of hotels of varying quality. Most of them are located on Mohamed V Avenue. Others are on the road to Rissani. Since the hotels and guest houses have multiplied at the foot of the dunes of Erg Chebi, Erfoud is increasingly abandoned by tourists, who prefer to go directly to Merzouga. The region of Erfoud and Rissani has a culinary specialty, the medfouna, a kind of pizza covered, filled with meat and onions. Numerous bouis-bouis line Mohamed V Avenue for most of its length. If you think you can trust their cooks and entrust your stomach to them, you can eat there at low prices.
