TAMUDA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

Archaeological site

Discovered in 1920, the archaeological site of Tamuda allows an exit on the outskirts of the city. Its name comes from the Amazigh word "tamda", which means swamp, the name formerly given to the Martil wadi. Research on the site shows that this Mauritanian Punic city, founded in the 2nd century BC, was completely destroyed in the 1st century during a war between two Mauritanian kings. It was rebuilt but finally destroyed in the 40s after the Aedemon War.
