Tetouan is at the crossroads of two identities, Moroccan and Spanish. This mixed-race city, where Spanish is spoken more than anywhere else, is located near Ceuta, a Spanish enclave, and has a population of around 380,000. Since its return to Morocco, Tetouan has been a strategic location in the Rif region, whose history has long been marked by instability. Known as "the white dove" for its many attractive whitewashed structures, it is also a modern city, exuding prosperity with its lively streets around Place Moulay el Mehdi. You'll especially appreciate Tétouan's medina, one of the most famous in Morocco, with its wide 15th-century ramparts and picturesque alleyways.
