This is where merchants used to gather on their way to Tangier. The square is still a popular meeting place.
At the junction of the new city and old Tangier, the Grand Socco is now known as Place du 9 Avril. More than two centuries ago, this was a wide esplanade where camel and donkey caravans rested. Today, it is the gateway to the medina and kasbah. The Rif cinema, refurbished as a cinematheque in 2007, is the main attraction, with its terrace bustling with cinephile conversation late into the evening.
