PORTE DE TRAVNIK
Original medieval gateway over the Pliva Falls. Its Ottoman-period guardhouse houses a restaurant.
This mighty stone gate (Travnička Kapija) guards the southern entrance to the walled city, above the Pliva Falls. Created at the same time as the city walls at the end of the 14th century, it originally served to protect the city's main bridge over the Pliva, which has now disappeared. It was modified by the Ottomans from the 17th to the 19th century, with walls 1.20 to 3.30 m thick, a vaulted passageway, a tower, a small bastion, a fountain and a guardhouse, known as the "Omer-Bey House". The latter houses the Omerbegova Kuća restaurant.
