QUARTIER DE BIKAVAC
Neighborhood overlooking the Sokolović bridge, marked by the bulbous bell tower of a church. This was a major massacre site in 1992.
On the hill southeast of the Sokolović bridge, this district (Бикавац) is dominated by the bulbous steeple of a Serbian Orthodox church built in 1884. Inhabited since the Middle Ages, the site is the origin of the town's name: in Old Slavic, višegrad means "high town". But Bikavac is haunted by the massacre of June 27, 1992: 70 mostly Bosnian inhabitants were killed here in a house set on fire by Bosnian-Serbs. Since 2017, the nearby hill has been adorned with a 5.5 m-high cross in honor of the pro-Serbian Russian militiamen of the last war.
