FORTERESSE DE STRAČ
Ruins of a mighty Austro-Hungarian fortress completed in 1916. Superb panorama. Access via an easy 5 km path.
Situated 678 m above sea level, this ruined fortress (Tvrđava Strač/Тврђава Страч) was the most powerful in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, along with Przemyśl in Poland. Built in reinforced concrete from 1910 to 1916, it housed 179 soldiers and guarded the border with Montenegro - which capitulated in January 1916. Partly underground, it retains four metal domes that housed two observation posts and two cannons aimed at the mouths of Kotor. Superb panorama. Easy 5 km trail starting from the south of Crkvinа hill (336 m ascent).
