This palace was the residence of the Russian viceroys of the Caucasus and one of the most distinguished buildings in imperial architecture.
After the annexation of Georgia by Tsarist Russia in 1801, sumptuous monuments to the glory of the Russian Empire were built. Erected in 1858, the palace is one of the most distinguished buildings of imperial architecture. It was the residence of the Russian viceroys of the Caucasus. In 1918, the young government moved there and declared the advent of the new Republic of Georgia. The Soviet authorities then turned it into the Children's Palace where collective celebrations were held. Renovation is currently under way and should be completed in 2021.
