Ulan-Ude is the capital of the Republic of Buryatia. The River Uda flows through the city. It is known for its role as a trade center between Russia, China and Mongolia. With a population of 436,406 in 2022, Ulan-Ude is the third largest city in Eastern Siberia. Ulan-Ude's city center is characterized by its richly decorated old merchant houses and the monumental sculpture of Lenin's head in the main square. The city is also home to a large ethnographic museum that traces the history of the region's peoples, as well as an important Buddhist monastery, the Ivolguinsk datsan. On the economic front, Ulan-Ude boasts two major industrial complexes, including a locomotive and railcar repair plant, as well as an aviation plant that builds airplanes and helicopters. The city is accessible by air from Baikal International Airport, and is served by the Transmongol railway line.
