The highest point on the island of Olkhon, Mount Juma is located in the heart of the island, equidistant from its northern and southern extremities. The deepest point of Lake Baikal (1,642 m) lies 10 kilometres to the north-east. The Buryates consider Mount Juma to be the earthly embodiment of the spirit of Lake Baikal. It is a most sacred natural monument. It is therefore strongly advised, out of respect for the local culture, not to approach it.
