Located on the steep left bank of the Ob, at the mouth of the Barnaulka River and at an altitude of 156 m, Barnaul is the capital of the Altai Krai. It is one of the two entry points to the Altai Massif. The region boasts the birth of Germain Titov (in the village of Verkhnee-Gilino), who became the famous Russian cosmonaut who flew over the Earth in 1961 on board the Vostok-2 rocket. Despite its industrial vocation (it is home to one of Russia's largest ammunition factories, as well as Transmach, a large manufacturer of diesel engines), Barnaul (635,000 inhabitants) is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Siberia. Its historic centre abounds in architectural gems made of logs and stone palaces from various periods.
