COTONTCHAD
To complete your industrial knowledge, you can visit the cotton plant of cotton (seeds will be valued in tourteaux, oil and soaps) and the balles of the fibres. During the colonial period, each family was beholden to the rope, which represented a certain mandatory area to cultivate, the product of which was to be handed over to the village chief and then to the administration. However, this compulsory work has resulted in numerous abuses, which have led to bloody revolts, including in 1946 in Baïbokoum, in 1949 in Bodo, in 1950 in Moundou and in 1952 in Bébalem. The "rope" was banned in 1955. The year 1999 saw a sharp decline in the price of cotton, which in Chad rose from CFAF 170 to CFAF 150 per kilo. It was also in 1999 that the Chadian state initiated a policy of disengagement from the sector, discouraging many farmers and thinking about converting their fields into vegetable crops… If the years 2009-2010 were, for the Chadian cotton Sector, a period of low water production, the latter has been increasing since then. The year 2012 was marked by company restructuring and a re-engagement of the state.
