MARABOUT'S HOUSE
This building illustrates the central role played by marabouts (Muslim religious scholars) in Ouaddaïan society, a region where Islam played an essential role from the 17th century onwards. Marabouts, as religious and spiritual figures, occupied a prominent place in the social and political hierarchy, and their influence extended beyond religious matters into the affairs of state. The house is located outside the palace enclosure and features a central pyramidal pillar, recalling the line between zenith and nadir.
