Mértola celebrates every odd year the Islamic culture and the values of tolerance: concerts, exhibitions, theater...

This superb festival promises a meeting of the cultures that have shaped today's Portugal. The city, from the top of its ramparts to its churches, which are former mosques, clearly evokes its Moorish past. In this remarkable site overlooking the Rio Guadiana, Islamic culture is celebrated, as are the values of tolerance and respect. In addition to dancers, musicians, lectures and theatrical performances, there are calligraphy workshops and couscous served with mint tea.
