Medina is a housing complex that was built in 1999 on the site of the old medieval city limits. Medina means "old city" in Arabic. The plans for the complex are part of a larger urban project overseen by the renowned Dutch architect Jo Coenen who designed the OBA, the Amsterdam Public Library. This complex with hanging gardens has made the city center greener and attracted wildlife. The complex includes 58 apartments and 15 apartments/workshops as well as some stores.
