NATUURHISTORISCH MUSEUM
Museum with fossilized remains, aquariums to discover the fauna and flora of the region, with exhibitions
Charming museum in a former cloister from 1703. It is dedicated to the atypical natural environment of South Limburg. Many of the exhibits are related to geology. The collection includes the fossilized remains (replicas) of the enormous mosasaur (Meuse lizard) discovered in 1770 in the Saint-Pietersberg and taken (stolen, as the Maastricht people would say) by the French to be exhibited at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Fortunately, an even larger mosasaur was discovered in 1999 (and knock!). The museum also presents aquariums and makes us discover the fauna and flora of this region. It is fun to listen to the songs of 54 birds. The "cabinet" is the most beautiful room of the museum and takes us back to the origins of the museum: an association of enthusiasts comparing their finds and collections. The botanical garden is very pleasant and will allow you to discover the wild plants of the region, and you will be able to listen to the students of the conservatory who practice in a charming cacophony. Note that the museum produces and sells its own honey. A room renovated a few years ago hosts temporary exhibitions that are always very interesting. This museum is a very pleasant sight in a place that loves youth. A special program for young people has been set up. Thematic workshops are regularly organized, such as mask making or the creation of a mini-museum. A very pleasant visit and a little out of time.
