East London is an English creation, of course. In 1835, an exploratory mission reached the mouth of the Buffalo River. It was essential to establish a port in this area in order to quickly supply the troops engaged in the sixth frontier war against the Xhosa. In 1848, Sir Harry Smith named the new outpost "London", a port that soon became "East London". Now the largest river port in South Africa, aesthetes will turn a blind eye to the architecture of the centre and the waterfront. The urban community of East London, King William's Town and Bisho is called Buffalo City.
