The "city of roses" owes its nickname to the large number of flowers that abound in its parks and gardens. Its history is intertwined with the adventure of the Free State. Situated at an altitude of 1,395 m on the plateau of the Upper Veld, which some people call Motheo, it enjoys very favourable climatic conditions for crops and people. Here there are students, rugby players, friendly innkeepers, straightforward fellows and, on the lot, people who are not so friendly, not to you but to the black neighbour. Racism is palpable in this town, which resembles a city in the American Wild West with its white cowboys.
