This stadium, which has been completely rebuilt, is the most important one because it hosted the opening match and the World Cup final! One of the most artistic stadiums, the design is inspired by the calabash, an African pitcher.
Close to Soweto, it is a symbol for the millions of black people who live in this township. Nelson Mandela gave one of his most famous speeches there when he was released from prison in 1990. It was here again that South Africa won the historic 1996 African Nations Cup final against Tunisia.
