BASILICA SANTA MARIA DE LOS ARCOS

The oldest religious monument in all of Rioja, this basilica was built in the ^5th century on the ruins of a Roman mausoleum, using materials from the ancient Roman city of Tritium Megallum (Tricio la Grande, which extended over the present-day village of Tricio and other surrounding localities, such as Nájera). In the choir there are superb Romanesque frescoes dating from the end of the 12th century that depict several episodes from the Passion of Christ.
