Budapest's first permanent bridge, this historic structure marked the first step towards the unification of Buda and Pest.

Budapest's first permanent bridge, the Lánchíd was built on the initiative of Count István Széchenyi. Work, directed by Scottish engineer Adam Clark, lasted from 1842 to 1849. Previously, crossings had been made on ice in winter and on floating bridges in summer. The bridge marked a first step towards the unification of Buda and Pest, of which Széchenyi was a great supporter. Destroyed during the Second World War, the bridge was rebuilt identically in 1949.

Magnifique
