BUDAPEST ZOO
Remarkable Art Nouveau-style zoo with several greenhouses and a variety of animals, a great address for a family visit.
Budapest Zoo opened in 1866, then went bankrupt before being bought out and completely rebuilt in 1912. This renewal was distinguished by a surprising Art Nouveau style for an establishment of this kind. The entrance to the zoo, adorned with monumental sculptures of two elephants, is particularly striking. Inside, the visit is a captivating experience, particularly appreciated by children. The zoo is distinguished by its interactive aspect: in some greenhouses, visitors can wander freely among monkeys, tropical birds and bats. Rhinos and other savannah animals can also be seen. The large greenhouse houses a snake house. Further on, a paddock allows children to feed biquettes. Lions, tigers, polar bears and other large predators can be observed through modern glass panes that have replaced the traditional fences. Pannonian Park, an ambitious project including a biodome coupled with a park, is still under construction, although its opening was hoped for as early as 2021. The biodome is accessible for a few exhibitions, and animals are beginning to occupy the exterior (end 2024). Eventually, this area should house subtropical species, animals from the Carpathian Basin, as well as several ponds and aquariums. The old rides from the zoo's historic amusement park (e.g. the 1909 carousel) have been restored and integrated into the Holnemvolt section. The zoo celebrated its millionth visitor at the end of October 2024.
