GYULA CASTLE
Impressive fortress in Gyula, the only medieval fortress on the Great Plain, housing a museum and wine cellar.
This massive, square brick structure, with its high, crenellated walls and central keep, is the only medieval fortress on the Great Plain. It was built in the first half of the 15th century by the Maróthi family. From 1552, it was part of a series of defensive works built along the border against the Turks. From 1566 to 1695, the castle was in Ottoman hands. Today, on the lake in front of the fortress, there is a stage where historical plays are staged. Museum.
