ALMÁSY MANOR (ALMÁSY KASTÉLY)
Almásy Manor, an ancient noble family of the Hungarian Great Plain, for an authentic visit to Gyula.
The Almásy dynasty, an illustrious family from the Hungarian Great Plain, was linked to Gyula Manor through the marriage of Countess Stephanie Maria Wenckheim and Count Kálmán Almásy. Very popular in the region, the Almásy family were distinguished by their sense of social justice: Count Kálmán, an enlightened humanist, was committed to improving the living conditions of local orphans and the elderly.
The manor also played a key cultural role: in 1746, it became the first private residence in Hungary to host a theatrical performance. The composer Ferenc Erkel, a great friend of the Count and founder of Hungarian opera, was a regular visitor, giving piano concerts at social occasions.
Today, a visit to the manor house offers a lively immersion in the daily life of yesteryear. On the first floor, an interactive tablet reveals the hierarchy and tasks of the servants. You can visit the vaulted cellar with its food stores, wine barrels and charcuterie, then the baroque kitchen, separated from the world of the masters by a symbolic green door. Upstairs, visitors wander through family portraits, formal wear, newspaper articles and personal objects. One is struck by the harmonious contrast between styles: a classical dining table, baroque chandeliers, the Count's bedroom furnished in a neo-Renaissance style with bentwood. A journey into the refinement of a bygone era.
