SYNAGOGUE (ZSINAGÓGA)
Szeged's impressive synagogue, one of Hungary's most beautiful, is a must-see landmark of the city.
The Szeged synagogue, built in 1903 by Lipót Baumhorn, is one of the most remarkable in Hungary. Built in an eclectic style combining Gothic, Moorish and Art Nouveau elements, it can accommodate 1,340 worshippers. Its finely crafted structure, turrets and colors of white, blue and gold exude harmony. The interior is just as symbolic: the dome evokes the Universe, the 24 columns represent the hours of the day. The lectern comes from Jerusalem, the acacia wood arch from the Nile. An inscription commemorates the flooding of the Tisza.
