UNDERGROUND GALLERIES AND ARCHBISHOP'S CELLARS
Underground galleries and cellars of György Fenessy, bishop of Eger, a remarkable site to visit in Eger.
Beneath the town of Eger lies an impressive 3 km-long network of tufa rock cellars, created in the 18th century when the bishop's palace was built. Thanks to their microclimate, these cellars were long used to store the wine tithes collected. Today, they can be visited on guided tours, with demonstrations of ancient hydraulic systems. Entrance is from the museum garden. Bring a sweater: it's 12°C all year round.
