An impressive 625-metre-high fortress, with views of the Cserhát, Mátra and other surrounding mountains.
The Salgó fortress, perched 625 meters above sea level, was built in the 13th century to protect the region from Tatar invasions. Today, it offers sublime views of the surrounding mountains, notably Cserhát and Mátra. Although partly in ruins, its walls and towers still evoke medieval times. Access is via a forest path from the village of Salgóbánya, about 15 minutes' walk. Free parking in front.
