BARBICAN (BARBAKÁN)
Circular bastion dating from the century, part of the defensive wall of the former episcopal palace of Pécs.
This is an advanced circular bastion dating from the 15th century, which formed part of the double defensive wall of the former bishop's palace. Built between 1498 and 1501 on the orders of Kinizsi Pál (a famous 15th-century Hungarian general in the service of King Matthias Corvin), it was protected by a drawbridge, loopholes and a circular curtain wall. The barbican, located a few hundred meters from the cathedral, is at the end of Pécs' most popular promenade. You can climb up to it. It is the only barbican still visible in Hungary.
