FERTŐRAKOS QUARRY
Ancient quarries at Fertőrákos, already exploited by the Romans, resembling a troglodytic temple from ancient Egypt.
These ancient limestone quarries, already exploited by the Romans, resemble a troglodytic temple from ancient Egypt. The cliffs, some ten meters high, are encrusted with marine fossils dating back several million years. The acoustics in these immense halls are so fabulous that a lyric theater has been built. The quarries have become the most popular stage for the Sopron Festival and are part of the World Heritage of Mankind: classified by Unesco as the "Cultural Landscape of Fertő / Neusiedlersee".
