Barra del Colorado, with its 81,000 ha, is the largest refuge in the country, but it remains little known because of its remoteness and its less spectacular attractions than those of its powerful neighbor Tortuguero. Voted as one of the ten best fishing sites in the world, the refuge holds several world records in this field. It is also considered of international importance by the Ramsar Convention. As you can imagine, the refuge is home to a very diverse ecosystem, and an incredible biodiversity. The northern and southern areas of the refuge are the most frequented. The first, around Isla Calero, is accessible by boat from Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, following the Sarapiquí River and then the San Juan River along the border with Nicaragua. The second one borders and almost merges with the Tortuguero National Park. The surroundings of the village of Barra del Colorado, at the mouth of the Colorado River (hence its name), are known by fishermen who come here for tarpon. The western zone is in the middle of a debate between those who favor its development, especially with regard to communication routes, and those who would prefer to see it spared. Barra del Colorado will be an exciting stop for travelers looking for adventure - the real thing - who want to get off the beaten track.
