Zhaoqing extends along the Xijiang River west of Canton/Guangzhou. The date of creation of the city remains uncertain. However, it appears that Zhaoqing, formerly known as Gaoyao, existed under the Qin dynasty (221-206 BC) and the Han dynasty. The city changes its name to become Duanzhou under the Sui dynasty. Zhaoqing is now known as an important military base. It is in the sixteenth century that the city welcomes its first Westerners. Matteo Ricci, an Italian missionary priest, moved to Zhaoqing in 1583. This emblematic figure marked the history of the city. A memorial was built in his honor. Today, Zhaoqing is a good place to live.
