At the northern entrance to Lijiang, where visitors flock to photograph the famous - yet innocuous - waterwheels, lies a far more evocative treasure: a huge, finely sculpted wall of red clay. This vibrant relief depicts the daily life of Yunnan's pre-tourism inhabitants, with its peasants, oxen, musicians, traditional houses and ubiquitous Naxi culture. A veritable fresco of identity, it celebrates the old town's inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1997.
