BOTANICAL GARDEN
Botanical garden with 2,000 different tropical plants from China and other countries
The Menglun Tropical Botanical Garden is the largest tropical botanical garden in China, and one of the most important in Asia. It extends over almost 900 hectares, on a peninsula formed by a loop of the Luosuo River, a tributary of the Mekong. A long suspension bridge crosses the river, often enlivened by the play of village children. After a palm grove and bamboo forest - home to 120 of China's 400 known species - you come to the botanical museum and buildings of the Tropical Plant Research Institute, founded in 1959 by the famous botanist Cai Xitao.
Managed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the garden is now home to over 13,000 plant species from China and around the world, including medicinal plants, tropical fruit trees, rare orchids, endangered plants and the utilitarian plants of Yunnan's ethnic minorities. A precious portion of primary rainforest still remains, serving as both a research area and a guided walk. The park can be explored on foot or by shuttle bus, along landscaped paths and suspended walkways linking themed gardens, greenhouses and experimental areas. Butterflies and other insects also benefit from this biodiversity haven. The garden's herbarium contains thousands of specimens from southern Yunnan and is a reference center for botanical research in tropical China. Nature lovers are in for a treat in this paradise dedicated to plants and flowers of all kinds!
