NANKIN STREET - NANJING LU
Christened in 1864, Shanghai's main shopping artery was the central avenue of the old international concession. Since September 1999, Nanjing Lu is partly reserved for pedestrians. Between Hendrik Lu and Xizang Lu, more than 60 major stores, specialty shops and offices are gathered. More than two million hikers arrive every weekend, but the Shanghaiens prefer the Huaihai Lu, the chic avenue of the old French concession.
Marked by thousands of shops, stretching over 5,5 km, this enclave is in the process of becoming a tiny Hong Kong with its rows of flashing neon lanterns. Here's the old «Four Great» stores in Shanghai that have regained their lustre over the last three years. Store 1, at the corner of Tibet Street, a Art Deco structure built in 1934 by three young Chinese architects, remained the most popular store in Shanghai with 250 000 visitors per day.
